In Welcoming the Stranger, Motus Theater’s undocumented monologists invite you to step into their shoes. Their monologues interrupt the dehumanizing and racist, anti-immigrant narratives. Special guest readers Bishop Hope Morgan Ward and Corridor District Superintendent Mike Frese from the North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church will be reading aloud Armando Peniche’s autobiographical story of racial profiling experienced as a 12-year old boy, and the danger of slanderous rhetoric to an undocumented man and his American son. 

The reading will be followed by both personal and theological reflections on the importance of sacred hospitality, and the impact of stepping into the shoes of an undocumented immigrant. Each monologue is followed by a musical response from Elisa Garcia.

This performance is part of Motus Theater’s Welcoming the Stranger series - a collaboration with faith leaders who express moral courage and civic hospitality as they read aloud the story of an undocumented person and reflect both personally and theologically on seeing the world through the eyes of an immigrant.
