MOTUS PLAYBACK IMPROV THEATER

What have you gotten yourself into?
Motus Playback Theater is an improvisational form of theater in which a company of actors reenacts, on the spot, the real-life stories shared by an audience. A “conductor” encourages audience members to share moments, feelings, and stories - conducting a mini-interview with those who volunteer an experience from their lives to be “played back.” A musician underscores the performance to support the theme of each story. This improvisational form is used across the world to share stories in an artistic manner.

The form is totally voluntary. But storytelling is at the heart of what makes us human. We hope you will gather around the fire with Motus Playback Theater, share your stories, and learn new ones. So… What’s your story?

ABOUT MOTUS THEATER

Motus’ mission is to create original theater to support community conversation on critical issues of our time. We aim to use the power of art to build alliances across diverse segments of our community and country. We present multimedia history performances through the lens of race and class. We also work with people on the frontlines of violence in the U.S. to tell autobiographical monologues to create momentum for strategic policy change. Motus Playback Theater is a new Motus project. Motus aims to train a diverse group of culturally competent improv performers that are prepared to skillfully playback the multitude of experiences that make up our unique communities.

MOTUS THEATER’S SHARED HISTORY ACKNOWLEDGMENT & ACTION

Motus is committed not simply to acknowledging the stealing of indigenous land and the labor of racialized people, but to taking meaningful action to create a new, more equitable, and life-sustaining future for everyone in our country. As part of these actions, Motus creates performances that illuminate foundational patterns of exploitation in U.S. history, and shares autobiographical stories that disrupt false and dehumanizing narratives used to justify inhumane, racist, and exploitative policies. Motus Theater also provides 10% of the costs we pay in theater rental to the Native American Rights Fund (NARF).
