JustUs: Stories from the Frontlines of the Criminal Justice System

  • via Zoom Boulder, CO (map)

“I wanted you to know that the people of color who walk in this community… walk around in another America - facing other trauma that you will never have to experience.” - Maurice Cox at a Black Lives Matter protest in Boulder, CO

JustUs: Stories from the Frontlines of the Criminal Justice System features JustUs monologists Dereck Bell, Brandon Wainright and Juaquin Mobley reading their own autobiographical monologues; and Maurice Cox, the teaching pastor from Ascent Community Church, standing in the shoes of JustUs monologist Daniel Guillory by reading aloud his story, and reflecting on his experience with law enforcement, and the brutality of prison and punishment. The reading will be followed by personal reflections from the monologists and readers, and a conversation and Q&A with Jessica Howard, the Racial Justice Campaign Coordinator for the ACLU of Colorado. Each monologue is followed by a musical response from vocalist Jann Oldham.

*Don’t miss Motus Theater’s companion performance on December 3rd at 6PM MST/8PM EST where law enforcement leaders, DA Michael Dougherty, Police Chief Rick Bashor, and Captain Corey Pass read the JustUs monologues.

This performance is part of Motus Theater’s Shoebox Stories project where Motus asks community leaders and prominent Americans to step into the shoes of Motus’ JustUs monologists by reading aloud their stories and then reflecting on the experience of seeing the world through their eyes.
