Stories from the Frontlines of the Criminal Justice System with Motus Theater’s ‘JustUs’

In Motus Theater’s JustUs formerly incarcerated leaders Juaquin Mobley, Astro Allison, Dereck Bell, and Daniel Guillory tell autobiographical stories about the racism and injustice of the criminal justice system with the goal of mobilizing discussion and inspiring action toward true justice.

The monologues are woven with healing and powerful musical responses by acapella singers from Spirit of Grace, who regularly tour with Colorado’s most famous experimental rap-rock band, the Flobots.

After the performance, Colorado State House Representative Serena Gonzalez-Gutierrez will join the Q&A to discuss and answer questions about Colorado's first-in-the-nation law enforcement reform bill that challenges qualified immunity, which she co-sponsored. Bill 217, the Enhance Law Enforcement Integrity Act, includes provisions such as banning chokeholds, overhauling the use of force, and significantly expanding the use of body cameras.

This performance is part of the programming of One Book One Boulder, which this year focuses on the book So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo.

Presented by Motus Theater - creators of UndocuAmerica, Women of Resolution, Rocks Karma Arrows, and the Shoebox Stories Podcast. And generously sponsored by the Boulder Library Foundation.

* The JustUs autobiographical stories were created in a 17-week collaborative process between Motus Theater’s Artistic Director, Kirsten Wilson, and Astro Allison, Dereck Bell, Cierra Brock, Brian Lynch, Daniel Guillory, Juaquin Mobley, and Brandon Wainright.
